About Tankular Village

Tankular Village, is a small fishing and farming village where the river flows in the streets when the tide is in. It is located in Kiang West in the Lower River Division of the Gambia. Takular got about 1000 residents at the moment. It is peaceful and tranquil village where you can always connect yourself to nature because of its location (it’s situated between the river and the hills). Tankular is a very old village which has being in its current location for many centuries. From the oral history the village was found by a brave hunter called Tankur hence the name Tankular.

Tankur used to go for hunting by the river side and he found the place attractive and fascinating and he eventually relocated there with his family. The Portuguese have come into contact with this lovely village during the Portuguese exploration to West Africa in the 16th century. They settle there and built a church there, the church bell is marked as 1711.

As the Chinese Proverb says ‘an invisible red thread connects who are destined to meet regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch, tangle but never break’. No matter where we may be under this sun, the indigenous of Tankular either directly or indirectly need to understand that the light of life in them come from Tankular. We should keep that light alive and alight. This web site is set up with that noble intention in mind, to bring the people of Tankular together from far and near to get to know each other better and share our thoughts and aspirations to take the village forward.

It is important that articles, comments, etc are edited and discussed in a participatory manner before being posted on line. In addition when posting, talk about your org. but forget about the main Association which is at no dispute will any body from or well wishers of Tankular who are calling for peace, solidarity, socio- cultural, and economic development in Tankular. Tankular, the Pride of Kiang, is Located in the Lower River Region of the Gambia. It is on the extreme edge of the River Gambia about 108 Km from Banjul International Airport with a population of about 2000 people.Tankular was one of the settlements where Portuguese Missionaries settled beyond James Island. Therefore the village is of great historic significance, even though, unfortunately not much was documented about the descendants of this all important settlement. Tankular in the 1700s was described by European travelers to the Gambia as a place of great resort and richest in the whole of the River {Moore 1730} The people of Tankular are very resilient, hard working and committed to a common objective….. to improve their living standards and general well being. Recently a land mark accomplishment was made by the collective efforts of the villagers and good Samaritans, who gave their support. This monumental achievement will soon be celebrated in a grand fashion..I will let u know the rest. by Jerry K Drammeh
